The age of the infrastructure, the cost of the green certificates, the growing part of renewables, and the political pressure on tariffs make the life hard for the DGO’s, while the hope in smart meters to bid some breath is screwed down due to lack of broad adoption.
Besides, the resulting continuous tariff increases cause initiatives to take zones off the grid, which will reduce the volume base and squeeze the revenue. Grid operators now face the challenge of turning problems into opportunities:
- benefitting from the renewables instead of suffering from them;
- offering new creative services making net management easier against limited, but well tailored, investments in infrastructure and IT systems;
- launching new tariff structures to decouple the revenue from the energy volumes and ensuring a flourishing future for them and for the society.
